Food Blog #3
Presenting my latest installment of food blogs! Today we worked with beef stew, and had a few minor set backs (thank god the smoke detector didn't go off!) but in the end things turned out well!

Thursday, October 9th, 2008:

I started by covering the stew beef in flour and added it into the stew pot with about 2 cups of water and a can of tomato paste. I let that come to a boil on medium high, adding about 3/4 cups red wine an hour in. At this point I lost track of time and the beef ended up burning...(never watch tv when you're cooking!) and was very discouraged, thinking it was ruined.

But I didn't want to waste the beef, so I decided to try and doctor it up anyway. I added in another two cups of water and let it simmer with the lid on for the rest of the time. After about 2 1/2 hours in, I added in four chopped potatos, two springs each of thyme and rosemary, 3/4 cup red wine, another 2 cups water, tbsp. flour, and a bag of baby carrots.

After another thirty minutes I mixed in 17 chopped mushrooms and let that simmer a while. In the last half hour I added in pickled tiny onions (I believe they're called white pearls?) after soaking them overnight in water to get rid of most of the pickled taste.

Overall it turned out well, you couldn't really taste that it had been burned at all with the finished product, though I wasn't a big fan of the onions...next time I'll take the time of not buying the canned pickled kind...

Oh and I served it with a sweetened lime juice, it didn't necessarily go with the meal specifically, but it was all we had ^^;
